F/W16 THE COMMUTE
INSPIRED BY MY MORNING COMMUTE, THIS F/W 2016 COLLECTION IS ABOUT TRAVELING AS A COMMUTER AND THE COMMUTE.
Based on my commute, I developed a collection that focused on getting the commuter from point A to point B. Drawing inspiration from others on my own commute to and from school on the New York City transit system, I observed people's sartorial choices, their interaction and how they carried their belongings in the subway. With unisex inspired silhouettes, this collection incorporates hints of feminine details and utilitarian functions for everyday wear. Because public transportation is a shared space, The COMMUTE sets out to resolve notions of privacy and personal space by keeping the wearer's belongings safe and hidden through the use of pocketing and layering.
Crowded trains during early morning commute often leave people vulnerable to pick pockets, as a solution, the pieces in the collection feature various types of concealed pockets, all which would be unfamiliar to the naked eye. Another design detail that I chose to focus on was the wearability aspect; familiar silhouettes that are shared by both men's and women's clothing made with easy to care for materials such as jersey, denim and nylon. Although womenswear, the collection can be easily transferred into menswear and fit within anyone's wardrobe whether they are headed to work or casually strolling in the rain.

The Lookbook
The Commute was born from the idea of existing in shared spaces such as public transportation. Taking inspiration from my own travels to and from school and work, I used the NYC MTA as a common motif throughout the collection. For The COMMUTE lookbook, I’ve utilized the overhead electronic route map found on most newer trains as a layout for the five looks. Looks appear in both close up details, far full body, standing, walking and sitting poses to emulate what one would see during their commute; across the platform or whilst on the train pulling into a stop.
